The visit of the President of Carnegie Mellon University
The Qatar Businessmen Association Second Deputy to the Chairman Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Thani Al Thani, has held a business lunch in honor of the visit of the president of Carnegie Mellon University Dr. Jared L. Cohon, in his Majlis in Al Gharafa.
Dr. Cohon became the president of Carnegie Mellon University in 1997, in which he guided all of the university’s global expansion efforts, and has successfully led the university on a variety of fronts, including diversity, technology, international education, and economic development in southwest Pennsylvania. He is an author, coauthor, or editor of one book and more than 80 professional publications, Dr. Cohon is an expert on environmental and water resource systems analysis, an interdisciplinary field that combines engineering, economics, and applied mathematics.
The delegation was received by the Chairman of the Qatari Businessmen Association Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani, QBA member, Mr. Sherida Saad Jubran Al Kaabi, QBA Board member, and QBA esteemed members Dr. Hussein al-Abdullah, Mr. Nabil Abu Issa, Mr. Abdul Hameed Mustafawi, and Mr. Maqbool Habib Khalfan.
Dr. Jared L. Cohon thanked QBA members for the warm welcome, and praised the major development in the construction and educational sectors that Qatar has witnessed in a short period, and he noted that Carnegie Mellon University and since its establishment has worked hard on preparing and qualifying graduates and provide them with the latest skills and knowledge that qualifies them to participate effectively in the community, he also expressed his gratitude that Carnegie Mellon University has been a part of the development of the educational sector in Qatar.
QBA members spoke about the achievement that Qatar has witnessed in all fields, especially in the education sector, with the state vision to transform the national economy to knowledge based economy under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani the Emir of the state of Qatar, in order to increase the State investments in educational infrastructure. It also should be noted that one of the most important achievements of the State of Qatar in this field is the foundation of Qatar Foundation which is chaired and supported by Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, which includes the Education City, which has attracted most leading universities in the world, and considered as an important institute in the region that contributes to the preparation of students to work and participate effectively in the various sectors of production in the country.
The Qatari businessmen also mentioned that their interest in the educational sector stems from their awareness that the real wealth of the state lies in preparing a generation qualified and capable of leading the country's development and drive the Qatar forward to achieve further progress at all levels, which will reflect positively on the national economy, The members also stressed on the importance of promoting student exchange between Qatari and American universities in order to enhance cultural and science exchanges.
At the end of the visit, Dr. Jared L. Cohon thanked Sheikh Dr. Khaled Al-Thani and the members for their hospitality, and wished the continuation of this strong relationship between Qatar and American universities.
